What tips do you have for minimizing deer damage in the garden?

There are three lines of defense against hungry deer. You can try one of these methods or use them in combination.

The first option is fencing, which must be 8-10 feet high to be effective. You can fence around groups of plantings or around the entire property.

The second choice is applying deer repellent on or around plants. Some repellents have a taste that deer dislike; others feature a smell that they avoid. Those with a disagreeable odor tend to be more effective. Repellents can be store-bought or homemade.

The third alternative is planting deer-resistant plants. These plants hold up well but aren't completely foolproof, because very hungry deer will eat almost anything.
