Answer

A fig tree, one that is used for edible fig fruit, is best grown outdoors in full sun conditions But,fig trees should be protected in the winter by covering them with insulating material such as carpet or burlap. That said, it is common to see fig trees doing well in the New York area without any protection at all. Some varieties are more cold tolerant than others, e.g. 'Brown Turkey', 'Chicago Hardy', 'Celeste', 'LSU Gold' and 'Brooklyn White'.
