Can I add new plants under a large mature tree?

We don't recommend plantings under a large, mature tree because most of the roots, especially mature roots, are at or just a little below the soil surface. Planting around the tree could damage delicate tree roots and even cut some larger roots. Aside from the mechanical damage, once in the ground, these plants would complete fiercely with the tree for nutrients and water.
