The best trees to grow as a bonsai  are hardy ones such as juniper (Juniperus), pine (Pinus), elm (Ulmus) Japanese maple (Acer), holly (Ilex), boxwood (Buxus), Ginkgo, Cryptomeria and Cotoneaster. Some tropical and subtropical trees are fig (Ficus), myrtle (Myrtus), Serissa, Fukien tea (Ehretia microphylla), Podocarpus, azaleas, Camellia, Gardenia, and pomegranate (Punica granatum).

Be sure to remember that bonsai made from hardy trees will still need a winter dormant period. They will suffer if you keep them indoors over the winter
