What is the best fertilizer to prepare lawns for the winter? I live in a marine environment in the Bronx, NY.
In October you can fertilize your lawn with an organic food such as Espoma Lawntone. Although we usually do not recommend products, it's best to use non-synthetic fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers can pollute our waterways. Adding compost and irrigating deeply and infrequently will force grass to send roots down into the soil to find moisture, making it more drought tolerant. The amount of water to use varies for each grass variety and soil type, but about an inch every week—from rainfall or your hose—is enough to keep an established lawn thriving.
