When can I plant tomatoes outdoors in the Northeast?

Answer

The last frost date in the NYC (five boroughs) area is between April 8th and May 1, although night temperatures need to stay in the 60s for tropical-origin tomatoes to grow well. Tomatoes catch up fast, so planting later is fine. Once you find that nights are regularly staying warm, in the 60's, check the weather forecast to avoid a cold snap and move your tomato out to the garden bed.
