How do I prune my leggy privet hedge?

Answer

The good news is privet (Ligustrum) is a very tough plant. You can completely rejuvenate it by cutting the branches down to 4 - 6 inches from the ground in late March; in the case of a very tall privet, prune to about half the present size.

Once you achieve the height you want, prune it in an inverted keystone shape. In other words, make sure the lower part of the shrub is wider than the top. That way sun can reach the lower branches and they won't get so leggy.
