What is the best winter care for my outdoor container-grown Japanese maple?

Answer

All Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) need a period of cold winter dormancy; ultimately they cannot live without this cold treatment. But trees grown in containers have greater cold exposure than trees in the earth as their roots are closer to the surface. For easy winter damage protection you can place your tree in its container in a protected but unheated location. A good choice is an unheated garage or outbuilding away from windows. (The plant must be kept away from direct or indirect sunlight).

Bring the tree into the unheated garage once it goes dormant outdoors. Do not allow it to dry out completely over winter. Give it some water, but not too much (no saucer required) about once a month to keep it from desiccating.

In spring, pull the container out of its sheltered spot and replace it outdoors before the buds break and the leaves start to grow.
