How do I turn my small lawn in Brooklyn into a native plant garden?

Answer

We are happy to hear that you want to create a garden with native plants. I have a couple options for you.

NYBG has an online guide to native plant gardens called Natural Habitats that encompases planning the garden and selecting plants.

I have added another link below that also has a great list of native, regional plants for New York, Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey. Plus it gives you a little information and a short description. Read through and anything that sounds interesting, you can look up to decide if you want. Then, of course, you have to find the plant. You might be able to find it online or we often recommend Rosedale Nursery in Hawthorne, NY (Westchester County)

This website allows you to enter a plant name and find places around the country that sell it. http://plantinfo.umn.edu/

The second option is to contact  Greenbelt Native Plant Center on Long Island. I think they work together with the Staten Island Botanical Garden. Anyway, check out this link and give them a call.
