Can I grow a fig plant indoors?

Answer

A fig tree, one that is used for edible fig fruit, is best grown outdoors in full sun conditions.  But, fig trees should be protected in a cold winter area such as the northeast by covering with insulating material such as burlap. That said, it is common to see fig trees doing well in the New York area without any protection at all. Some varieties are more cold tolerant than others, e.g. 'Brown Turkey', 'Chicago Hardy', 'Celeste', 'LSU Gold' and 'Brooklyn White'. Although, in a harsh winter the plant can suffer winter damage.
