Can you tell me about Syringa pekinensis?

Answer

Syringa pekinensis is a lilac species now known as Syringa reticulata subsp. pekinensis.  It is native to North China. Its common name is Peking lilac or Chinese tree lilac. This species is a small tree or large shrub best grown in Zones 4-7. It produces showy, fragrant flowers in May or June. It also has beautiful bark. The Peking lilac is best grown in full sun but it will tolerate some shade, although it does not flower as well in the shade. It is tolerant of varying conditions and makes a good street tree. Is is also less susceptible to powdery mildew than most lilacs. A variety P. pekinensis 'Morton', sold as China Snow®, which has striking bark as well as large, creamy-white blooms, is very popular.
