How do I propagate Scindapsus (Epipremnunm)?

Answer

Scindapsus (now properly called Epipremnum aureum and commonly called pothos) is a longtime favorite houseplant. Propagation is usually done by cutting in springtime, and rooting occurs in 4 - 6 weeks. Potting mixture is used and not water, because it’s difficult for the plant to acclimate water grown roots into soil. So propagation in soil in spring time has more success.

The technique involves tip cutting 3 - 4 inches long. Cut immediately below a node and remove the bottom leaf. Plant three or four cuttings together around the rim of a 3-inch pot containing a moistened, equal-parts mixture of peat moss and coarse perlite potting mixture. Enclose the whole in a plastic bag. Place it in a bright, filtered light area.

After rooting takes place, remove plastic covering, and water moderately. About three months later after the start of propagation, move each plant singly into a 3- or 4-inch pot (or several into a hanging basket) of potting mix and treat them as mature specimens. Special point: Prevent the plant from growing too big by cutting back stems of larger plants every spring to a point just in front of a healthy leaf.
