Q. Is it dangerous to compost leaves of plants that have been infested with Cyclamen Mites? Could my worms be affected?
It is not wise to put infected leaves in your compost bin as they may survive there for some time.
As to your mite problem on your African Violets, there are several thing that you can do.
1. If only a few leaves are infected then you should remove and destroy them. If the plant is severely infected then it is best to discard it and start over again. Quarantine any new plants and observe them carefully before adding them to your collection.
2. Treat the plants with a miticide e.g. Marathon or Neem. Follow the instructions on the label carefully.
3. Submerge the plants in warm water (110º) for 15-30 min. Keep the plant entirely submerged and top up periodically to retain the temperature.
