Can I prune the large center stick of my pencil cactus?

Answer

You can prune the central leader of your pencil cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli). The plant will no longer grow directly from that central point, but will sprout new limbs from the area once the cut has healed.

It is essential that you take precautions to protect yourself from the toxic sap of the plant when pruning this plant. Protect your plant as well by using a sterilized instrument to make the cuts. More information can be found in our FAQ "How do I prune a pencil cactus?"
