Can you be more specific on light requirements for orchids?

Answer

Generally speaking, Vanda and Cattleya have quite high light requirements (2,000-4,000 foot-candles). Medium-light orchids such as Miltonia and Oncidium need 1,500-2,000 foot-candles. Low-light orchids such as Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum grow well at around 1,000 foot-candles, such as in an eastern light exposure, or a filtered southern light. Light intensity can be measured with a light meter.

You can find more information on the light requirements and related care for popular orchids grown in the home in our Guides to Caring for Orchids.
