What is the best way to water orchids?

Answer

The amount of water your orchid needs depends upon the conditions of its natural habitat. You can find out about the watering needs of many of the popular orchids to grow in the home from our Orchid Care Guides.

The process of watering orchids is pretty consistent. Typically, rain water or filtered water can be used, although tap water at room temperature is fine. When using tap water, it is best to fill a container with water and set it out overnight to help release the chlorine. Plants are less active in the winter and require less frequent watering, but check the medium with you handy finger to determine whether your orchid is ready for more water. When it is time to water, place the plant in a sink and allow the water to soak through and drain out completely. Always water in the morning. It is best to use tepid water, as it will help to dissolve fertilizer salts and not shock the plants. Remember that humidity in the air is just as necessary as moisture in the soil and decreases the likelihood of your orchid drying out. Air movement is essential, as it evaporates moisture on leaves and stems and helps protect plants from the spread of disease. If you are keeping your orchids in a closed room, an open window (when temperatures are in the target range), the movement of air from a humidifier or from a fan are an often-neglected factor in growing healthy orchids.
