What potting medium is good for orchids?

Answer

For many epiphytic orchids like Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) a bark type orchid mix is preferable. Terrestrial orchids, such as Paphiopedilum or slipper orchid, prefer a finer bark mixture with peat, and like more moist conditions. Epiphytic orchids, on the other hand, like to dry out a bit, since their natural habitat is hanging out in the upper branches or crotches of trees. Be sure to use only quality orchid potting mixes and never substitute landscape mulches for orchid potting mediums.

You can find information on the right potting mix and procedure for the most popular orchids grown at home in our Orchid Culture Guides.
