Some of the most tough, drought-tolerant groundcovers are creeping phlox (Phlox subulata), creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum), sedum (Sedum spurium "John Creech"), ornamental goldenrod (Solidago sphacelata 'Golden Fleece'),  and lamb's ears (Stachys byzantina). These plants like well-drained growing conditions and don't like wet feet. Ornamental goldenrod is also tolerant of salt. The goldenrod and catmint ('Nepeta x faassenii ‘Walker’s Low’) release potent weed-suppressing allelochemicals. Catmint, lady's mantle (Alchemilla mollis) and creeping phlox are usually unharmed by deer.
