There are many flowering plants that grow happily in the shade. Here is a partial list:

• Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel) – a native shrub
• azaleas
• rhododendrons
• Enkianthus perulatus (white enkianthus) -  may be hard to find in nurseries
• Enkianthus serrulatus – whitish-pink flowers
• Hydrangea macrophylla, e.g the cultivar ‘Endless summer’
• Hydrangea quercifolia (oakleaf hydrangea)
• Amelanchier arborea or A. canadensis (shadbush) – can grow quite large; a native shrub
• Euonymus fortunei (wintercreeper) – usually a ground cover, some have variegated leaves
• Euonymus kiautschovicus (spreading euonymus)
• Camellia japonica – there are many cultivars available, some of which are hardy in this area in a sheltered spot; winter and spring flowering
• Clethra alnifolia (summersweet) – a native shrub
