What flowering plants will grow in the shade?
Answer
There are many flowering plants that grow happily in the shade. Here is a partial list:
- Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel) – a native shrub
- azaleas
- rhododendrons
- Enkianthus perulatus (white enkianthus) - may be hard to find in nurseries
- Enkianthus serrulatus – whitish-pink flowers
- Hydrangea macrophylla, e.g the cultivar ‘Endless summer’
- Hydrangea quercifolia (oakleaf hydrangea)
- Amelanchier arborea or A. canadensis (shadbush) – can grow quite large; a native shrub
- Euonymus fortunei (wintercreeper) – usually a ground cover, some have variegated leaves
- Euonymus kiautschovicus (spreading euonymus)
- Camellia japonica – there are many cultivars available, some of which are hardy in this area in a sheltered spot; winter and spring flowering
- Clethra alnifolia (summersweet) – a native shrub
