Propagating a fig tree is easy and best done in mid-spring. Cut a 10-12-inch-long branch that is about one finger thick from a mature tree. The cutting should have at least 3-5 nascent buds.

Plant the cutting into the site or into a container. (Make sure the lower part of the branch and not the upper part is placed in the soil.) You can use the soil from your garden or make up a mixture consisting of 1/4 compost, 1/4 planting soil, and 1/2 coarse sand (builders sand, not beach sand). Water it well, all the way through the container, until the water comes out the bottom. Planting time may vary. It can be done after the last frost date, about May 1st in the New York City area, or earlier if the weather report indicates mild weather and the danger of frost has passed.
