I have an NYC terrace with a pot that is 40 inches in diameter and 38 inches deep. I would like to plant a fountain purple beech.

It will get good summer sun/shade. Does this sound like a good idea?

Answer

Your beech will probably work.

Fagus sylvatica is hardy to zones 4-7; it does not do well in severe heat. Its habit is densely pyramidal to oval or rounded, branching to the ground, very formal (stately) in outline. Its rate of growth is slow to medium.

Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea Nana', Purpurea Nana Dwarf Purple European Beech, is
compact, 10feet high and 6 feet wide, oval in form with small purple-brown leaves.
