Is there a banyan tree at NYBG?
If not, is there a banyan tree in NYC?
Answer
There is a single banyan tree cultivar (Ficus microcarpa 'Variegata", or variegated Indian Laurel, ) at NYBG in the conservatory house 3.
Ficus microcarpa can grow to 40 ft high and may be invasive in its native habitat; hardy to zones 9b-11. Parts of plant are poisonous if ingested, handling the plant may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction to some people.
