Can I prune a Norfolk Island pine houseplant?
Answer
Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is a popular indoor conifer. In the wild it can mature to 200 feet tall, but it stays much smaller indoors, growing about 6 inches a year.
Its fast rate of growth can create a problem as this houseplant can quickly outgrow its space in the home. Pruning is not a good solution. Much of the plant's appeal relates to its wonderful symmetry. If you cut off the top of a Norfolk Island pine, it will stop growth from that point. To maintain the plant's natural shape, you would need to regularly remove growth from the lateral branches in a graduated fashion. That is possible to do but the tree will no longer have the delicate end growth. Most gardeners end up dissatisfied with the results.
