Q. When is the best time to unwrap fig trees?
The right answer varies with location and of course temperature, as warming continues globally. Here in the New york City area, Zone 6, you can remove the first layer of covering now (mid-March). But leave the remaining burlap on until after the end of April--there are no hard or fast rules. If the 10 day forecast is seasonable remove it on May 1st. Previously we advised people not to remove covering until after the last frost date. The last frost date is based on a 30 year averaging and is usually around Mother's Day (mid-May) in Zone 6, a or b. Watch the forecast in case of unexpected frost, when you should cover you fig tree loosely, and remove during the day. In Fall, wait to wrap you fig tree until all the leaves have fallen, around Thanksgiving,
