When do I plant cauliflower seed in NYC area?
Answer
Starting cauliflower from seed is done about a month before the last frost date (in our area, around the first half of April). Begin your seeds indoors with seed germination temperature of 70 degrees F. or more and moderate moisture. Seeds should be moved to growing cells as early as manageable.
Seedlings should be no more than four to five weeks old when they go into the ground after a week long period of hardening off. A growing temperature of 60 degrees F. is fine.
Keep plants well watered and fed with a dilute solution of fish emulsion or kelp fertilizer. Varieties that are less sensitive to heat and cold are recommended, such as "Early Dawn', 'Andes', 'Snow Crown' or 'Fremont'.
Harvest when the cauliflower head is fully formed and the "curd" has not started to separate.
