How can I conserve water in the Bronx? Can you tell me about reclamation resources?

I am managing a large residential community in the Bronx and am looking for someone to help us think more about water conservation and sustainable planting projects.
Interested in water conservation & reclamation ideas as well as planting indigenously. Any ideas are welcome or suggest someone who can help. Thank you,

Answer

What a wonderful and timely direction to be taking your community's garden! We have a number of resources that may be useful for you, including Bronx Green Up, an NYBG Bronx community gardening partnership program.  You can contact them at 718.817.8026 or bronxgreenup@nybg.org.

I suggest that you also have a look at our guide Conservation Resources in the New York Metropolitan Area which lists a number of organizations that provide training and information in conservation topics,  the guide Sustainable Gardening which discuses conservation of water in the landscape and the guide Gardening in a Changing Climate.  For planting of native species, our guide Natural Habitats: Gardening with Native Plants will get you started with guidelines for choosing plants and a list of plants native to this area.

Finally, the EPA has several excellent resources that you might find useful including the pamphlet Water Smart Landscapes.

Please let us know if we can be of further help as your plan takes shape!
