How do you make your conservatory ponds look black and mirrored?

The NYBG conservatory manager recommends the following to make your pond look black and mirrored: 

Environmentally friendly pond dye- it comes in powder or liquid concentrate depending on the volume to be treated. It can be found online and often at garden centers.

Pond dye can also be used outdoors as it is in the NYBG Native Plant Garden.
