When do you think the magnolias will bloom this year?
Answer
The Magnolia Collection can bloom at different times depending on the weather. Mid-March to late April is usually the timing with some varieties blooming earlier and others later. Our Magnolia collection includes 78 different species, hybrids, and cultivated varieties. You may be most familiar with the early-flowering trees that bloom before they bear leaves but there are also native magnolias that bloom as late as May.
You can find a Schedule of Flowering for NYBG's collections, with approximate dates here. It should be noted that this chart is only an approximation. A mild winter often results in plants flowering earlier. Conversely, a cold spring may delay flowering.
We also have a regularly updated Spring Bloom Tracker that will help you assess how much of our most visited collections have bloomed.
