My gardener just weed whacked all my perennials in my flower beds down to the ground. Is there anything I can do to encourage regrowth?

My gardener just weed whacked all my perennials in my flower beds down to the ground. Is there anything I can do to encourage regrowth for next year? I'm so upset! Some plants have been here for 50 years (iris)and others I just planted this past Spring. The plants cut down include: sedum (still in bloom), iris, daffodil, coreopsis, veronica (royal candles),hosta, nepeta, phlox, rudbeckia, and others. Would mulch and compost help?

So sorry your plants were whacked away. There is a good chance most will return next year. A layer of compost is good, and mulch can be added once the ground is fully frozen. The plant roots hopefully are still there which gives the good prospect of regrowth. I'm still gasping...I wonder what your ungardener was thinking?
