Are there fragrant Hydrangeas?

Not all hydrangeas are fragrant, but there are some that have a wonderful scent.

Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) has strongly scented flowers in cone-shaped clusters that average 8 inches long and 6 inches wide. The flowers start out white, then turn pink. This shrub is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8. It reaches 6 to 20 feet tall, depending on the cultivar. The PeeGee hydrangea (an acronym for Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora') has a particularly sweet scent. This variety grows up to 20 feet tall and can be trained as a small tree.  Another fragrant hydrangea is climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris.

Hydrangea spp. are popular for their showy blooms, but not all varieties have a fragrance to go with the flowers.
