Do you dead head dragons breath celosia?

Do you dead head dragons breath celosia? I live in zone 8-9. and have heard this plant will winter like a perennial

Answer

Celosia can bloom from June until frost. During that time, deadheading your celosia will encourage new blooms. Remove the flowers as they start to turn brown and lose color. If you wait too long after this point, seed development starts and the plant puts its energy into that rather than new blooms. Deadheading is not necessary in fall, as the plant is not likely to bloom again.

You can also pinch back new growth to create a bushier plant at the early stages of growth.

Celosia are tender perennials and will die if temperatures drop into the 30 to 40 degree area or below. If they are planted in containers, they are even more exposed as the roots are closer to the chilly air.

See our Guide to Growing Celosia for more information.
