I have an African mask houseplant and I'm not sure how to make it thrive.

I have a plate of water under for humidity but that's all I know to do.

Answer

African mask plants  (Alocasia varieties) need warm conditions and high humidity to grow well in the home. Temperatures from 65-85F and humidity above 50% is idea. Keep the plant evenly moist and allow to dry slightly between waterings.

During the winter months it is not uncommon for them to reduce the number of leaves that they have putting on their best growth during warm humid summer months. The smaller lower leaves will die off as the plant matures.

Feed regularly with an organic balanced fertilizer for best foliage growth. As far as pests are concerned keep an eye out for spider mites which can commonly infect Alocasia especially during the winter months due to the dry indoors conditions.

They can be a challenge and slow growing in the home but the incredible foliage is worth every effort.
