What is the "stump" near the base of the leaves on my ponytail palm tree (beaucarnea recurvata)?

Answer

A stump at the base of your tree's leaves is evidence of the technique used to stimulate thick, palm-like growth. The stem is cut, and multiple stems sprout from around the cut to create the full "ponytail".
