Why is my African violet crown growing so tall in November?

Answer

It sounds as though your African violet is asking for more light. That's not unusual this time of year when the hours of daylight are dramatically reduced. From spring to early autumn, these plants like the gentle light of an east facing window but, in the Northeast, where daylight is very restricted by mid-autumn, some plants do better gradually moved closer to a south-facing window so they are getting at least ten hours of light. Each home is different, with exterior and interior factors regulating the light the plant receives.

Adding some artificial light is another possibility if you don't have a good, south-facing spot for it. We have a Guide to Artificial Light for Houseplants that will give you an idea of what's involved.

Take care not to overfertilize. Fertilize African violets once a month going by package instructions or fertilize 1/4 strength for weekly feeding. Use a balanced African violet fertilizer.
