Clivia prefers moist potting mixture when in growth during spring and summer. When watering, thoroughly moisten the soil with tepid water in the morning and then let drain, emptying out the runoff dish after 15 minutes. Deep watering encourages the plant to extend its roots throughout the pot which contributes to a healthy plant. It also flushes out accumulated fertilizer and mineral salts that could otherwise damage the roots.

Take care not to let water drip into the leaf fan where it can lead to crown rot. If the plant is placed outdoors in summer, protect it from heavy periods of rain and don't let water collect in a dish under the plant

Fall and winter water care: Gradually reduce watering in the fall and keep the plant nearly dry during a six to eight week, cool, bud-forming, rest period allowing the plant go dry until the leaves start to droop. This simulates the seasonal dryness of its native habitat. The dry period should coincide with cool conditions described in our Clivia Guide linked below sometime in the period of October through January. When returned to household temperatures at the end of two months, gradually increase watering frequency. 

The care described here is effective in the New York City area and may need adjustment in warmer, brighter areas.
