What is the correct seasonal temperature care for clivia?
Answer
In New York City, normal room temperatures of 65 to 75ºF. are fine for growing Clivia from the time it develops flowers through the summer. The plant responds well to a move outdoors to a shaded area once days warm to the 70 to 80ºF. range. Make this transition gradually, with a few additional hours outdoors each day for a week, so that the plant doesn't experience stress.
Fall and winter temperature care: To flower well, Clivia should be placed in a cool area during fall's natural temperature drop, such as in a cool porch or near a cool windowsill that does not freeze. Even a protected spot outdoors before any risk of frost will suit this purpose. It should experience cool resting-period temperatures (below 50ºF. and above 35ºF.) for six to eight weeks at some point in the period of October through January as a signal to begin setting new flower buds. The cool period should coincide with dryer conditions described in the Clivia Care Guide linked below.
Raise temperature back to about 60ºF. gradually after the cool resting period. The plant will produce buds and be ready to flower about two months after the cool resting period ends. For instance, a plant kept in dormancy for November and December will typically bloom in March. If not given this cool dormancy treatment, flowers may be prematurely produced on short stalks or occur later in the year.
Protect plants from the stress of extreme temperature shifts that occur if placed too near an in-home cooling or heating system vent.
