I live on Long Island and would like to add plants that will support butterflies and caterpillars. Can you suggest any resources?

Answer

I am so glad that you are thinking of planting for butterflies.

Our Guide to Butterfly Gardens will help get you started with information on providing resources to both the caterpillars and the adult butterflies of the species most common in the New York City area. The Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County can offer you additional information about butterfly habitats in your location. They have their own Butterfly House Environment in Yaphank that is open 7 days a week during the summer to educate residents on supporting regional native butterflies. You can find their contact information here.

The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is an outstanding resource regarding butterflies. Their Pollinator Conservation Resources for the Northeast Region can be found here and include thoughtful information on everything from site assessment to planting guides.

You can read more about establishing native plant gardens that support pollinators in this NYBG FAQ: Where can I get help with adding native planting and lawn alternatives for the New York area?.
